In Memoriam: Željko Šain

Professor Željko Šain left behind a tremendous scientific legacy. Above all, he valued honesty and knowledge, which he selflessly sought to pass on to younger generations until the end of his life. We will remember him for the good he did on every occasion, his incredible life energy, and his efforts to make this society better. In the last few years, he spent his time in retirement alongside his teaching commitment, working with his friends and colleagues to lay the foundations of our Foundation. And he succeeded in that.

As a member of the Board of the Foundation, he made an invaluable contribution to the Foundation's work and to gathering a large number of university professors, academics, and entrepreneurs from across Bosnia and Herzegovina around the idea that "knowledge is the driver of every society, and that Bosnia and Herzegovina should become a knowledge society." It is now our responsibility to make his work permanent and to further promote the values of acquiring and developing knowledge. May the earth of Bosnia be light upon you, our dear professor!

Dr. Željko Šain, emeritus professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Sarajevo, passed away after a sudden illness at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Clinical Center in Sarajevo. The exceptional care and attention of the doctors at the Infectious Diseases Clinic greatly assisted during the difficult days of Željko Šain's illness. The death of Željko Šain was felt painfully by his family, among friends, colleagues at the Faculty of Economics, and numerous acquaintances in the City of Sarajevo and beyond in Bosnia and Herzegovina and his native region of Kraljeva Sutjeska. Professor Željko Šain grew up during his childhood in the environment of the Franciscan community at the Franciscan monastery in Kraljeva Sutjeska. Better acquaintances say that Željko Šain's birthplace is in the neighborhood of the Franciscan monastery in Kraljeva Sutjeska. Željko used to say among us friends and acquaintances on suitable occasions: I am a child of the Franciscans of the Kraljeva Sutjeska monastery. And it is known that Franciscans develop the values of goodness, humanity, and interpersonal solidarity in their religious and cultural upbringing of people. Professor Željko Šain recognized these values in his childhood and lived in the spirit of these values. During his education from elementary school to university, he developed a commitment to learning and acquiring knowledge.

He had a culture of extraordinary solidarity. Although facing difficult social circumstances due to the early loss of his father, Željko Šain achieved notable results during his academic schooling. After completing his studies, he dedicated himself to an academic career, progressing from assistant to full professor at the Faculty of Economics in Sarajevo. Numerous generations of students remember him as a professor who passionately transferred his knowledge in the subject: actuarial mathematics. He was a mentor to many students during their graduation exams, master's theses, and doctoral dissertations. He conducted this academic activity not only at the University of Sarajevo but also at other university centers: in Tuzla, Zenica, Mostar, and Banja Luka. With great willingness, he encouraged students to study diligently and acquire high-quality knowledge.

In the past five years, Professor Željko Šain participated in international scientific conferences with his papers, including a conference celebrating 80 years of ZAVNOBIH. For all who collaborated with Professor Željko Šain, for all who were his friends and acquaintances, it remains to cherish the memory and human respect for everything that Professor Šain contributed to our joint work and our multi-ethnic Bosnian-Herzegovinian life. He exemplary nurtured the values of interethnic tolerance and national equality. His entire life and work followed the lines: a model student and pupil; a model university professor; a model in social activities for the common good in the existence of the City of Sarajevo and the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition to all this, he was a role model in fostering good interpersonal and neighborly relations. May the memory of people like Professor Željko Šain live on among us.

The word of the president

Scientific discoveries and technological advancements in the developed countries of Europe and the world are accelerating. Historical trends show that the economic, social, and cultural development of countries primarily depends on the quality of education and the acquisition of new knowledge. Knowledge is becoming the main resource in social development. This is especially important for underdeveloped countries and post-socialist transitional countries. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a society and state that builds its educational system in the post-war and post-Dayton period.

Its economic and cultural development in the process of integration into the European Union at the beginning of the 21st century is conditioned by the quality of the education system from primary school to university and by changing attitudes towards the importance of acquiring quality knowledge. Together with a group of enthusiasts, I voluntarily contribute my knowledge and experience within the Knowledge Olympiad Foundation to establish a new social relationship towards the importance of knowledge for the prosperity of Bosnian society.

My personal commitment is directed towards the Knowledge Olympiad Foundation stimulating and initiating through its council social processes and reforms that will lead to the full competitiveness of knowledge and skills of incoming generations in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European space. As a non-governmental organization, the Knowledge Olympiad Foundation will contribute to the affirmation of the education and knowledge acquisition system in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Two focal points in the selected goals of the Knowledge Olympiad Foundation will be permanently emphasized. That is care for talents in all scientific fields and providing support for talents to receive international recognition. Additionally, it is a concern for creating systemic conditions for the education of children and youth from all social strata. In achieving these goals, the greatest role belongs to the members of the Knowledge Olympiad Foundation council as the council gathers the most successful creators in their areas of professional activity.
