Tokyo, July 11, 2025. – A commemoration was held today in the capital city of Japan to mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, organized by educational institutions from Japan (Kaichi Nihonbashi Gakuen) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Treća gimnazija Sarajevo), as part of the youth exchange program Miraiba. The event brought together students, teachers, parents, representatives from local authorities, and diplomatic missions to pay dignified tribute to the victims of genocide and promote messages of peace and shared responsibility.

The program included a presentation on the historical context in which the genocide occurred, student messages, an artistic representation of memory, and messages from representatives of the educational and diplomatic sectors. A special focus was placed on the importance of educating youth and the role that the international community plays in preventing genocide and denying crimes.
Participants emphasized the importance of the adopted UN General Assembly resolution on Srebrenica, which calls for the global observance of July 11 as a day of remembrance, and obliges member states to ensure understanding of the events of July 1995 through the educational system.
„Srebrenica is a universal warning, a reminder for the future of our civilization. Education is our most important tool to build a future where crimes like this will never happen again“, stated during the commemoration the project coordinator of Miraiba, Kerim Hadžić.
Only by knowing historical facts, naming events by their true name, and genuinely confronting historical realities can we lay serious foundations for a better world without wars that we strive for, which we unfortunately do not have today, is the key message of this gathering.
The commemoration was realized as part of the Miraiba project, which for the third consecutive year connects students from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Japan with the aim of promoting peace, understanding, and shared values. A report on the commemoration and the marking of the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, as announced, will be aired in the central news of the Japanese national television TBS on Friday, July 12.
